As democratic setbacks threaten the rights of marginalized communities, students—particularly undocumented individuals, LGBTQ+ individuals, and women—face increasing vulnerability in education and civic life. This panel will address two key issues: the immediate concerns of students who feel targeted due to their immigration status, gender identity, or reproductive rights and the broader implications of these restrictions on democracy and civic engagement. Panelists will explore policies affecting access to education and resources and discuss strategies for creating inclusive, supportive learning environments that empower students to advocate for their rights.
Panelists include:
Dr. Jeanette McVicker, Professor of English and Coordinator of the Ethnic and Gender Studies program, discusses how faculty can incorporate critical social justice lenses and problem-solving skills into their courses to help students challenge systemic inequities.
Mason Fuller – President of Students for Fredonia and active in civic engagement, shares insights on organizing student coalitions and institutionalizing advocacy efforts.
Alex Bucknam – Assistant News Editor for The Leader, reflects on the role of student media in activism and awareness.
Marcia Merrins, a representative from the League of Women Voters of Chautauqua County, shares insights on how a grassroots organization successfully passed the NYS Equal Rights Amendment and the local efforts involved.
Workshop: Brainstorming Public Action & Awareness in Civic Education
Following the panel, a 45-minute "brainstorming" session will allow attendees to engage in an informal, solution-focused discussion. Participants will engage directly with the panelists and one another to explore practical strategies for promoting public action and awareness on campus.
