Freedonia Marxonia was created in 1987 by a Fredonia student to celebrate the connection between Fredonia and "Freedonia," the setting of the Marx Brothers' 1933 movie Duck Soup.
All are welcome to the opening of the Reed Library exhibit, with the theme "Vaudeville and the Marx Brothers." At 3:00, there will be brief opening remarks, group photo of attendees in complimentary Groucho glasses, and cake in honor of Groucho Marx's 129th birthday.
Also view submissions to the Freedonia Marxonia art contest, which will be part of the exhibit. (All are welcome to submit to the art contest with original renditions of one or more of the Marx Brothers. Entrants are eligible for prizes - $100, $75, $50.) The exhibit will be up through Oct. 20 (Homecoming Weekend).
This year, Fredonia's Founders Day will celebrate Fredonia's campus-community relationship by partnering with Freedonia Marxonia. Founders Day was initiated in 2017 to foster student, faculty, and staff appreciation of the rich legacy of the Village residents whose vision and significant financial backing helped establish a Normal School in Fredonia in 1867. A Founders Day display on the main floor of the Library will run concurrently with the Freedonia Marxonia exhibit. This collection of primary documents will be curated by Amanda Shepp and Pat Cummings-Witter of Reed Library's Archives & Special Collections
