Ethos New Music Society is proud to present composer and 2019 Miss America, Nia Franklin. Brought to campus in conjunction with the President’s Office and the Office of the Vice President of Enrollment and Student Services, Nia will be giving a masterclass to student composers on January 28th and 4pm in Mason Hall room 2019 on the campus of the State University of New York at Fredonia. Additionally she will have a lecture and Q&A session on January 28th at 8pm in the Williams Center Multipurpose Room also located on campus. Both events are free and open to all students and the general public.

Nia Franklin was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She earned an undergraduate degree in music composition from East Carolina University, and a master’s degree in music composition from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. Shortly after, Ms. Franklin was awarded a Kenan Fellowship at New York’s Lincoln Center Education and moved to New York City.

As a student at UNCSA, Franklin was a member of ArtistCorps, an AmeriCorps program that invites well-known artists into public schools and community centers to work with students with decreased access to arts programming. After relocating to New York, Franklin worked closely with Success Academy Charter Schools, founding a music club for students, and served as a cultural partner with the NYC-based non-profit organization, Sing For Hope.

Throughout her year as Miss America, Nia Franklin has worked on her social impact initiative ADVOCATING FOR THE ARTS. She speaks with students, school administrators, and teachers about the importance of arts education and why it is so vital to a well-rounded education.

Nia writes: “I am thrilled to be coming to Fredonia University to work with its music composition students, speak about all that I've done over the last couple years, and what I'm up to now. I found out about Fredonia in graduate school through a fellow classmate who attended Fredonia in undergrad. He talked about his many great times there. I'm ready to take in the Fredonia experience and continue building upon my work as Miss America by advocating for the arts.”

Ethos New Music Society is a student-run and student-funded organization at the State University of New York at Fredonia which hosts guest composer and performers, and puts on concerts of student works.
